A Breville espresso machine needs two different kinds of cleaning, and they need two different products. Cleaning tablets remove coffee oils from the shower screen and filter baskets. Descaler removes the mineral scale that hard water leaves inside the machine. One doesn’t do the other’s job, so most owners need both.
Breville sells its own version of each, and third-party tablets are cheaper. The catch with third-party tablets is fit: not every tablet works in every Breville, and one of the kits below specifically excludes the Barista Touch.
I went through the manufacturer specs and compatibility lists for each of these. Here’s what matters when choosing.
Best Breville Cleaning Tablets and Descalers
Breville BEC250 Cleaning Tablets
Breville’s own tablets, and the safe default if you want to be sure they fit.

- Cleans coffee oils only; you still need a descaler for scale
Each tablet goes into the cleaning disc in the filter basket, and the machine’s cleaning cycle does the rest. They target the shower screen and filter baskets, which is where coffee oils build up and start to make shots taste stale.
Breville Espresso Machine Descaler
Breville’s own descaler. A good pick when it’s in stock, though at the time of this update Amazon lists it as currently unavailable.

- Four treatments in a pack
- Removes hard water scale, which tablets don’t touch
Cons
- Currently unavailable on Amazon, with no restock date given
- Costs more than generic descalers
Breville lists it for the Barista Express (BES870), Bambino Plus (BES500), Dual Boiler (BES920), Oracle (BES980), Oracle Touch (BES990) and Oracle Dual Boiler (BES995), along with several of its kettles and tea makers.
If it’s still out of stock when you need it, check your machine’s manual for what else it allows before using a generic descaler.
YQXYH Espresso Cleaning Tablets
A budget alternative to Breville’s own tablets, in the same 8-count pack.
Pros
- Cheaper than the official tablets
- Made for machines with a cleaning-tablet program, which includes many Breville models
Cons
- Not made by Breville, so check your manual and the tablet size before using them
- Eight tablets, the same small pack as Breville’s
You use them the same way: one tablet in the cleaning disc or tablet compartment, then the machine’s cleaning cycle. YQXYH recommends running a plain water rinse cycle afterward.
CleanEspresso Cleaning Kit
The best value if your machine is compatible: 40 tablets plus 6 water filters in one box. Check the compatibility note before ordering.

- Includes 6 replacement water filters (a replacement for Breville’s BWF 100)
- 2-gram tablets, which CleanEspresso says hold up to the cleaning cycle better than 1-gram ones

- Doesn’t fit the Barista Touch (BES880)
- Doesn’t fit Oracle Touch (BES990) machines from batch 1747 onward
CleanEspresso lists it for most other Breville models, including the Barista Express (BES870XL), the BES860XL and BES900XL, the 800ESXL and the Oracle (BES980XL). The filters need prepping before first use; follow the instructions in the box.

What to Look for in Cleaning Products
Compatibility
This is the one that can cost you. Check your model number against the product’s list before buying, and check your machine’s manual for which cleaning and descaling products it allows.
Pack Size and Value
Tablet packs range from 8 to 40 here. If you clean often, a bigger pack works out cheaper per clean, provided it fits your machine.
How Often to Clean
Your machine’s manual is the authority on this, and many Breville models show a light when a cleaning or descaling cycle is due. How often you descale also depends on your water: harder water means more scale.
Which Should You Buy?
If you own a Barista Touch or a newer Oracle Touch, or you just don’t want to think about fit, buy the Breville BEC250 tablets. For most other models, the CleanEspresso kit gives you the most cleans for the money. Either way, pair the tablets with a descaler, because they do different jobs.
